BYOD Policy
As with other schools in the region, we have decided to adopt a ‘BYOD’ policy, asking students to provide their own device. Our Information Technology infrastructure has traditionally centred on the Apple iPad platform, but in 2019 we will also be allowing Apple Macbook and Windows PC devices. For details on suitable devices please refer to the minimum specification requirements in the Connect Information Booklet.
We wish to stress that the device does not necessarily have to be brand new, however, if the device is not listed, it is not supported and cannot be used at the College. The iPad will need to have Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and the Connect Backpack app installed. All are available from the App Store. Macbooks and Windows laptops will need to have the Microsoft Office suite installed. This is provided at no additional cost by the Department of Education.
Please refer to the BYOD FAQ Link below for further information.
Network Settings for Windows devices
Unlike iPad and Macbook devices, BYOD Windows devices require some additional network settings in order to access all of the school’s network resources. Without these settings, students using Windows will not be able to access some internal websites, or be able to utilize the Papercut printing service.
All DOE schools use multiple internal DNS (Domain Name System) Search Domains. While iPads and Macbook detect these domains automatically, Windows requires them to be configured manually. In Windows, these settings are referred to as “DNS suffixes.” At Cape Naturaliste College, the required DNS suffixes are: E4178S01.schools.internal, indigo.schools.internal, schools.internal.
To make configuring these settings easier for parents and students, we have written a small application that will add these settings automatically. You can download and run the application using the link below.
Note: your browser may warn against downloading the file. This is normal for custom applications and the warning is safe to ignore.
Installing printers on Windows devices
Printing services at Cape Naturaliste College are accessed via a print management system called Papercut.
In order for Windows devices to communicate with the Papercut server when printing, Windows devices need to run an application to install each printer.
Below is a link to the Papercut Mobility Printer Setup application. This application will allow students to install school printers on their Windows device. The application can only be run while connected to the school network.
There is also a video below with instructions on how to run the application.
